Baxter aiming for eight at Prescott Speed Hill Climb
Seven times Prescott Speed Hill Climb winner James Baxter will be looking to make it a magic eight wins at this year’s event.
Baxter’s 1934 Frazer Nash Single Seater has reigned supreme for six years on the trot with the fastest time of the day (FTD) secured by the experienced racer.
Organised by the Vintage Sports Car Club, the hill climb is only open to pre-war sports cars. Some 260 vehicles enter the event on August 6 and 7 with competition for the FTD fierce.
Gillian Carr, spokeswoman for the VSCC, said: “Competition is tough on the day. James Baxter has won the fastest time for six years running from 2005-2010 and also won it in 2002. Entries are pre-war to Edwardian cars and cost from f6,000 to several million. It is a great place for spectators too.”
Prescott is the longest running hill climb in the UK – the VSCC has held an event there since 1947. Even the car park is an attraction with pre-war cars allowed to park in the orchard so visitors can view them.
Tickets are f8 for club members or f12 for the general public and are available in advance on the club’s website.
Although one of the favourites, the Prescott Speed Hill Climb is just one of many VSCC-organised events being held this summer. Other notable highlights include the Shelsley Walsh meeting on July 3. The club says the location provides members with a “spellbinding day of competition” and the steep start is more suited to powerful cars.
Then on September 3, the club descends on Pembrey Circuit, Wales, for a sprint event. Dubbed the “Welsh Speed Weekend” the entry list is sure to have a wide and varied range of competitors.
